Storage Tips
Try to use boxes that are a uniform size so they are easier to stack.
Place heavy boxes on the bottom and lighter boxes on top.
Leave a walkway between the boxes and furniture in your storage unit so you can get to the items you want without having to move much around.
If you’re storing a lot of packing boxes, fill them to the top, even if it’s just with padding or crumpled newspapers. Boxes that are only half-filled tend to collapse if anything is placed on top them.
Label the boxes on all sides. This will save time if you have to look for something in particular.
Be sure to store frequently used items at the front of the unit to avoid having to search for them.
Leave a small space between the wall and your storage items to allow for ventilation.
If you’re putting any metal items into storage – like lawnmowers or file cabinets – it’s best to treat them with rust protector or at least wipe them down with an oily rag.
Have a complete inventory of your stored items.
Even with 24-hour surveillance, Quality Self Storage recommends precautions. Pack your storage unit so your most valuable items are at the back and always confirm your unit is locked and secure when you leave.
Make sure all appliances are clean and dry before storing them. Leave appliances slightly ajar to prevent mildew.
If possible, store couches on end. Stack chairs seat to seat. Use the inside of appliances and drawers to store smaller items. When stacking furniture use paper pads in between the items to avoid scratching.
Store mirrors and paintings on end, not flat.
Do not use plastic to cover your belongings; it retains moisture.
Do not store any food items. This will prevent any unwanted guests.
Do not pack your boxes so they are too heavy to carry.
Do not give out your storage information to any one not included in your access information.
Under no circumstances should you keep anything flammable or combustible in your storage unit. This means no gasoline, oil, cleaning fluids, or paint thinner. If you’re storing anything that runs on gas, drain the tank before you store it.
